About Giulia Belotti

I'm a Research Fellow at the Institute for Responsible Carbon Removal and a PhD student at the Institute for Resources, Environment, and Sustainability at the University of British Columbia. My work sits at the intersection of climate mitigation, social justice, and governance, with a strong focus on collective ownership models and community agency in shaping climate solutions. At the Institute, I focus on carbon dioxide removal technologies, exploring the ethical and justice dimensions of these emerging approaches. As a PhD student, I’m expanding this focus to include more conventional mitigation infrastructure—such as solar and wind energy—investigating how these systems can be developed and governed in ways that center equity, accountability, and community participation. I have a background in public engagement and community-based participatory research, particularly with historically marginalized groups. Much of my work involves co-creating knowledge and processes that surface community priorities, values, and concerns around climate action and infrastructure development. Previously, I worked on land use planning at the intersection of housing, transportation, and climate justice, partnering with local communities to better understand the structural roots of urban inequality. Outside of research, I stay actively engaged in grassroots and activist movements for collective liberation, which continue to inform and ground my work. I am an eager learner and strongly believe in the possibility of achieving structural change and radical transformations within our political systems by adopting coordinated, comprehensive and inclusive policies on various levels of governance.
