About Glen Abernethy

I served as the Member for Great Slave since my election to the 16th Legislative Assembly on October 1, 2007. I am a life-long NWT resident and was born in Frobisher Bay, now known as Iqaluit in Nunavut. During the 17th Legislative Assembly I was selected as a member of the Executive Council and took on the roles of Minister of Justice, Public Works and Services, Human Resources, and Minister Responsible for the Public Utilities Board. In ddition to these portfolios, I was also the Chair of the Ministerial Social Envelope Committee, which was tasked with the development of an Anti-Poverty Strategy for the NWT. After a Cabinet change In October 2013 I assumed the role of Minister of Health and Social Services as well as the Minister of Seniors and Persons With Disabilities. I also maintained my role as Chair of the Ministerial Social Envelope Committee and Mister responsible for addressing Poverty in the NWT. After being elected for a third term in November 2015 I was honoured to be selected, once again, to the Executive Council where I have continued on as the Minister of Health and Social Services as well as the Minister responsible for Seniors and Minister responsible for Persons with Disabilities. I also took on the roles of Minister of the Workers Safety and Compensation Commission, Minister responsible for the Public Utilities Board, Government House Leader and maintained my responsibility as Chair of the Social Envelope Committee of Cabinet and Minister responsible for addressing Poverty in the NWT. Prior to my first election in 2007, I worked in human resources for the GNWT, where I was responsible for recruitment and retention of health professionals including nurses, doctors, social workers and all other allied health professionals employed in the NWT. I also served as the President of Folk On the Rocks for 3 years.
