Background

About Glen Morris

Glen Morris is currently a masters and Ph.D scholar at Purdue University, studying the impact of biosecurity on rural agriculture and how the best disease prevention strategies can effectively be implemented into education, policy, and practice. Glen was raised in a small town in Minnesota where he was influenced by a supportive rural community with entities in both public health and agriculture. Glen is a graduate of the University of Minnesota- Rochester, along with the University of Minnesota- Twin Cities. At the respective campus’, he received his Bachelors of Science in Health Sciences, and also Environmental Science, Policy, and Management. Glen first set out on his journey in agricultural studies at the 2012 Minnesota Youth Institute, where he later was able to attend conferences on behalf of the World Food Prize Foundation (WFPF). With his involvement with WFPF, he was able to gain a deeper understanding of cultural and scientific issues in various facets of agriculture. His opportunities included studying in Changsha China at the National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Center, and also researching as a Wallace-Carver Fellow at various United States Department of Agricultural Locations (USDA). After his undergraduate collegiate career, Glen worked at the Mayo Clinic in clinical research while attending graduate classes. His desire to keep learning and research agricultural issues eventually brought him to Purdue University, in the department of Agricultural Biology and Engineering. Glen hopes to utilize his collective skills and network to better understand disease prevention in agricultural communities, and to establish effective training and a deeper understanding of all populations in which it affects. Stories like When Smoke Ran Like Water by Devra Davis, or Silent Spring by Rachel Carson inspired Glen to learn more about issues, ones persistent within our environment, and created a desire to learn how to charge our future. It’s hard to believe that in a world of abundance, unresolved social, environmental and economic issues deprive so many from living a sustainable and safe life. “Through my experiences, I have come to realize that there is a significant amount of work that needs to be accomplished. It is imperative that we actively engage in this work and dedicate ourselves to its completion."
