About Glenn Irby

I began my career at age 19 as a Uniform Police Officer. After 10 years with the Eustis Police Department I decided that I wanted to pursue a degree in Business Administration. Several years later I graduated from both Lake Sumter Community College in Leesburg Florida and the University of Central Florida with a BS degree in Business Administration and minor in Accounting. After graduation, I went to work as a governmental accountant with the City of Tavares, FL. During my 13 year career with Tavares, I advanced to Assistant City Administrator and Finance Director. Also during this tenure I was elected as strong Mayor of the City of Minneola, FL. Also during this time I pursued a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Troy State University. I earned this degree during 2002. After graduation from Troy State, I was fortunate to be chosen as the first City Manager of Mascotte, FL. Since, I have worked for the Lake County Sheriff's Office as fourth in command and head of the business section (unit). I soon found that I was meant to oversee municipalities and resigned my position with the Sheriff's Office. Fortunately, the City of Umatilla was scouting for a manager and I was able to go there. In Umatilla we accomplished many things. Grew the small general aviation airport to a now profitable venture. Added fuel and a Fixed Base Operator. Also built and rented 14 assorted hangars using grants from FAA/FDOT. When I resigned my position here, all hangars were rented. I always wanted the opportunity to oversee and manage a much larger organization. When Apopka began looking for an Administrator, I applied. Shortly, I received a call from the Mayor showing interest and inviting me to interview. I was very fortunate to be asked to join the Apopka team. Specialties: I have working expertise with Union negotiation, purchasing, budget preparation and a broad working knowledge of all aspects of local government and Florida Law.
