As an anthropologist, Who has spent more than a decade in the Netherlands, waste management has been my main concern. It has been my dream to contribute in helping my native country Ghana to improve on her waste management issues. I have learnt many lesson during my research in 2006, which I captioned "waste classification Among Ghanaians living in Amsterdam" One of the outstanding observations comparing the Netherlands and Ghana has to do with poor drainage system in Ghana. It is also a common practice to throw plastic bags from sachet water into the open gutters thereby choking the gutters. Sometimes, waste that are collected are heaped along open gutters which end up in the gutters. As a result of the above, it is very common to experience flooding in the city of Accra at the slightest rainfall. Secondly, policies that are supposed to ensure that the garbage are thrown in the right places are not enforced. In The Netherlands, one could be fined for 75 euros for damping a bag of waste in the wrong spot. Ghana as well as most developing countries had a huge tax as far as waste management is concerned. My concern is What happens to the waste that has been collected and how is being treated. This is what I care about and will like to invite partners to help promote and execute efficient and effective waste management in Ghana. Thank you for taking the time to read.
