About Godwin Shen

I am a Product Delivery Manager and Software Systems Engineer in the Instrument Operations and Science Data Systems Section of NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. I lead teams of software engineers on various projects. My teams are responsible for delivering production level Science Data System software applications, deploying those applications to cloud or on-prem environments, and building foundational software services and infrastructure in those environments. Our applications produce and deliver Science products to various customer communities. Work on my teams include: software systems engineering, software design and architecture, software development, software optimization (e.g, run-time and memory constraints), database development, calibration algorithm development & implementation, workflow management software, integration with enterprise software services, testing, data simulation software, CI/CD. My daily tasks include sprint planning, backlog grooming, milestone review planning and preparation, enterprise integration planning, team coordination, software design & trades, code review, test design, Science product verification for new builds, enterprise test coordination, customer coordination, Science team coordination, detailed task planning, budget and schedule development & management, status reporting. Previously at JPL I managed a team of 15+ engineers of varying disciplines doing: image/video processing and machine learning algorithm development; software development; cloud computing software development and integration; system modeling & simulation; system performance analysis; software systems engineering; system commissioning. Prior to JPL I was with Northrop Grumman doing optical system modeling and simulation software, image/video processing algorithm development, software development and software systems engineering. My PhD research focused on image and video compression, with a focus on developing novel image transforms and intra-prediction algorithms using data driven methods to improve image and video encoder efficiency. Algorithms were integrated into fully functioning codecs that produced J2K images and H.264 compliant video, with corresponding implementations on the encoder and decoder side. I still tinker with video applications and recently built a simple HTTP Live Streaming system at home so that my wife can live stream our dogs at work.
