About Goodluck Agu

My vision in life is to contribute meaningfully to solving global challenges. My life's journey has been a continuous pursuit of this vision, that has now anchored to those surrounding 'Energy and Environment.' Like flip sides of the same coin, these two go hand-in-hand, and as the world's energy needs rise, so does the need for environmental stewardship. This is where my passion and interest lie. Through the course of my undergraduate and current graduate years, I have ventured into the practical applications of this concept. As an undergrad, I investigated the corrosive characteristics and environmental consequences of mild steel applications in the oil and gas industry. This early introduction to energy and environment fascinated me and laid the foundation for my now established interest in this field. Currently, at the University of Alberta, I am researching methane emissions reduction technologies in the oil and gas sector (Natural Gas, Petroleum systems, and Oil Sands). My work involves building detailed data-intensive bottom-up models (for each of these sub-sectors) that analyze emissions and project a variety of reduction scenarios aimed at achieving a cleaner future. Furthermore, my research also investigates resource use such as the water footprints associated with the implementation of these technologies, essentially providing a robust methane environmental assessment of the oil and gas space. Beyond my technical work, I am driven by a desire to create social impact. Having been recipient of scholarships and other opportunities all through high school to my current educational level, I understand the transformative power of opportunity and education. My gratitude fuels my commitment to pay it forward. This extends to all my endeavours, ensuring that the benefits of progress reach the wider community. In my free time, I solve sudokus, write poetry, listen to my nephew's baby talk, and volunteer as a career prep mentor.
