About Gordon Belt

I am an accomplished archivist, information professional and public historian with experience leading and managing teams in archival repositories and special collections libraries throughout my home state of Tennessee. I have served as Past President of the Society of Tennessee Archivists and currently work as the Director of Public Services for the Tennessee State Library & Archives where I lead the reference and research section, facilitating public access to state historical collections and government records, providing oversight for the public-facing service units of the Library & Archives, and fostering a collaborative culture within my department and throughout the organization. As an experienced history communicator, I have moderated and presented numerous public programs, appeared on radio and television interviews, and effectively leveraged social media for professional advocacy and for book marketing and promotional efforts. I have also established social media policies, strategies, and publishing guidelines for my employers, provided editorial oversight, monitored social media analytics, and created, edited, and solicited content for institutional social media sites. I am also a writer, editor and published author. I have served as an author and editor on numerous work-related articles, books, and special projects. I have also coauthored two books with The History Press, an award-winning publisher of local and regional history titles from coast to coast. My most recent book, John Sevier: Tennessee’s First Hero, critically examines Sevier’s extraordinary life as a celebrated soldier, admired politician and founding father of the state of Tennessee, shedding new light on this remarkable historical figure.
