About Gordon Self

I am very proud to have served in Catholic health care for 40 years, and feel very privileged to have worked with, and been present to people at the bedside at some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. These memorable experiences and wonderful people have made me who I am today, for which I am eternally grateful. I only hope I can give back in some small way to others as I have received. I am committed to try raise public awareness about important social issues of our times, especially related to abandonment. For four years I wrote a monthly ethics column in Western Catholic Reporter, before setting out to extend my literary reach through novels. I wrote The Necessities of Life (Friesen Press, 2014) that dealt with issues of addiction, harm reduction, and newborn abandonment. Drowning in Iowa (Friesen Press, 2015) relates to the enduring stigma surrounding postpartum depression, suicide, and pregnancy loss. And my third novel, A Most Spectacular Narrative (Friesen Press, 2017) delves into the issues of health care mergers and rediscovering the call to serve in the face of adversity and change.
