About Grace Henkel

I’m a student, editor and research assistant at Toronto Metropolitan University’s School of Journalism. I’m passionate about long form storytelling, critical analysis and experimental approaches to connecting journalists with the communities we serve. My current research focuses on the Srebrenica genocide in Bosnia-Herzegovina and the widespread, lasting legacies of sociocide, defined as deliberate attempts to eradicate the social fabric of a people. With a solidarity journalism approach, I have analyzed archival and current news coverage and peer-reviewed research. I have also spoken with survivors and their family members from the Bosnian-Canadian community to understand how the effects of genocide and sociocide continue to reverberate through diaspora—and to explore what healing and remembrance look like, 30 years later. I am experienced in editorial leadership and was recently promoted to Co-Editor-in-Chief at CanCulture Magazine. The stories I am most proud of have explored contemporary literature, local art, food sovereignty, harm reduction and human rights. I have also reported on public transit, crime, and sports.
