Background
About Grace Kamweru
I am deployed as an Assistant Lecturer at the department of Spatial Planning and Design at the Technical University of Kenya (TU-K) where I lecture on full-time basis. I offer consultancy services for landscape architecture and urban design projects under ArchGeo Consultants Ltd by preparing presentation and construction drawings, project implementation and supervision of landscape works. I have been able to boost my capacity and developed my skills in the field of environment; including conservation, climate change adaptation, policy and governance. This practise helps to realize tangible and incremental transformation of spaces; both private and public. I appreciate diversity and value teamwork. M.A. in Environmental Planning and Management exposed me to vast theory and policy capacities about the environment and development. I am conversant with SDGs and their related environmental dimensions, towards creating better human settlements in the world. I am aware of the impacts of development on the environment, conflicts over natural resources, green economy and consumption, natural disaster management, environmental protection strategies and importance of environmental impact assessments. The research process helped me to gain skills in empirical and statistical data processing and interpretation. Advanced Master of Human Settlement, enlightened me on how territorial, intermediate urban design and household scale projects, have potential to transform urban ills into spaces that offer diversity and solves multiple functions, meets social innovation, boost the economy and also help to protect the environmental integrity of such spaces. I am keen on how cities around the world are creating resilience against climate change and other nature related crises affecting cities. Following the prevailing COVID 19 pandemic, I am part of a market prototype steering committee that is preparing plans and designs of a Covid-response market for Nairobi. There is necessity to keep markets open for purposes of ensuring continuity in the food supply chain in the country and guaranteeing income for market traders in case of long drawn out COVID-19 lockdowns. I believe future planning and design of public spaces should put into cognition the imminent risks to human health and comfort imposed by the pandemic. I love new challenges and I think our current time presents opportunities to explore avant garde ideas to create a better environment for improved planetary and human health.
