About Graeme Mathieson

I am a Toronto-based DGC documentary filmmaker. Shaped by my Jamaican and Scottish roots, I was raised immersed in diverse cultures that sparked my curiosity and deepened my empathy for people’s stories, which has become the foundation of my work. My filmmaking journey has taken me across the globe, working with personalities like Ben Johnson, Leroy Sibbles, Nana McLean, Jagmeet Singh and Johnny Osbourne. I’m passionate about creating ethical spaces for storytelling, diving into sensitive subjects, and giving underrepresented communities a platform to share their history. Recent films include my feature documentary "Play It Loud! How Toronto Got Soul"(TVO, Knowledge, Telefilm), my 5-part anthology series "Sounds & Pressure: Reggae in a Foreign Land" co-directed with Chris Flanagan (NFB, TVO), and currently in development of 2 features,"Doorway Sleeper" and "Get Up, Get Down". I also co-founded Bonfire Originals production company to amplify untold stories and marginalized voices through powerful visual storytelling. Outside of filmmaking, I’m DJ Gramera, a vinyl enthusiast and host of “StolenSouls,” a community radio show I hosted for over 15 years. Whether through film or music, I’m driven by a love for authentic, culture-rich stories that deserve to be heard.
