About Grant Michell

Completing a trade apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering and working within the industry for 12 years, I decided to have a career change right around turning 30 and embarked on joining the Surveying profession.Having previous experience in Australia and the UK working within Manufacturing, Construction and Mining, I kicked off my Surveying career by enrolling in a full time Certificate Surveying & Spatial Science course. This study was to give me an insight and kick start into the Surveying profession. Whilst undertaking my full time studies, I worked as an Assistant Surveyor in a part time role with a Survey firm in Southern Sydney. Working on my days off from class, this helped me relate my studies to the field and provided me with some on the job experience and a taste of the profession in real life.Gaining my Certificate in 2013, I succeeded in finding a full time position in Sydney with Linker Surveying. Starting out as an Assistant, I rapidly found myself taking on more responsibility and in no time at all, I began working as a Party Leader. Working with a number of experienced Registered Surveyors within the business, I gained valuable knowledge and experience in the Cadastral and Construction field, whilst completing my Diploma part time, in person, class based after work, over the next 3 years. After successfully obtaining my Diploma in Surveying & Spatial Science at the end of 2016, I had some time off to see some more of the world and I enjoyed some solo travelling in 2017. Upon returning home to Australia in early 2018, I was successful in obtaining a Mine Surveyor role in Central Queensland working in Open Cut Coal Mining.Gaining valuable experience working in multiple Central Queensland OC Coal Mines for over 5 years (which also included undertaking some UNI study), I am now tackling a new challenge in a Senior Surveyor role at Glencore McArthur River Mine in the Northern Territory. Part of undertaking this role has found me mentoring & supporting not only the Survey Team, but the Mining Technical Services Team as Acting Superintendent/Delegate for weekend duties and when required.
