Background
About Greg Brown
Learning is the only thing the mind never exhausts, never fears, and never regrets” – Leonardo da Vinci. I see myself as a lifelong learner, as shown in my career. I started my apprenticeship as an Automotive Service Technician at a dealership. After acquiring my Red Seal, I moved on to my Heavy Equipment Technician certification with an oilfield energy services company. I obtained both my on-road and off-road Red Seal. With a young family, I returned to automotive for a more positive work-life balance. I was able to grow my critical thinking skills through in-depth diagnostics. This period was also the natural beginning of my leadership journey, as I spent many hours mentoring apprentices. Moving from a technician to a service dispatcher gave me a more comprehensive view of the auto dealer business. This role exposed me to the shop foreman, service manager, and warranty administrator positions. It allowed me to work on my communication skills and how to handle interpersonal relationships from a supervisory position. My experience so far afforded me a chance, while short-lived, to work as a fixed operations manager for an auto dealer. This new experience allowed me to continue to grow in my leadership journey and gave me a crash course in running a parts department (up until now, most of my time was spent on the service side). Both global (COVID-19) and personal circumstances led me to change gears again and head back to the oilfield. My various roles left me pondering what other opportunities existed. I decided to invest in my education to unlock further opportunities. My experience prepared me surprisingly well for a return to full-time studies and to obtain my BBA. This was an exciting step in this new chapter for my career and my growth. I want to highlight a couple of accomplishments that I am proud of. First, I completed all the Chrysler factory training, which gave me the title “Specialist.” This training was part of their Master Tech program. This training allowed me to dig deep into diagnostics and gave me a better understanding of what to look for when analyzing a problem. Second, I sat on the Alberta Automotive Service Technician Provincial Apprenticeship Committee. This opportunity allowed me to help outline the direction of the trade in such a way that was important not only to the trade but to industry. As I embark on a new chapter, I am eager to contribute my skills to project management, maintenance, or reliability roles. Let's embark on this journey together. Connect with me, and let's shape the future of our industries.
