Worked in the non profit sector since the 1980's on disability issues and have developed programs, wrote dozens of proposals and coordinated all aspects of a medium to large non-profit/charitable organization with staff across Canada. All my work has been to maximize the independence of people with disabilities in Canada with pre-employment programming right to finding a job. And through it all, we do assessments to determine an individuals ergonomic and adaptive technology requirements at their work station or in their working environment. Our multi-disciplinary approach leads to the social and economic independence of people with disabilities and by coincidence, I coined this phrase in reply to the Prime Minister in 1984 and it came into common usage, I have adjudicated complex human rights cases as a tribunal member and spent many years on the human rights aspects of disability and overt discrimination. I worked on all issues affecting people with disabilities from taxation to transportation to ableist building codes ignorant of morality and with poor design frameworks to general access to buildings, having spent five years using truck loading ramps, wheeling through garbage rooms and using back doors at McMaster University when I was a student (? really?) there. Things have changed - but not that much believe it or not.
