I study how we can understand why AI algorithms make the decisions they do. The key questions center on what makes explanations useful - from technical measures of quality to how humans interpret and use them in decision-making. Working with time series data, I investigate approaches to build AI systems that support meaningful understanding of their predictions and explore how domain expertise can be fed back through explanations to improve these systems.
