Background
About Gregory Hatchett
I’m a mission-driven leader in nuclear and clean energy, with over 20 years of experience guiding transformation across these sectors, including national security and environmental stewardship. My career has spanned regulatory affairs, nuclear safety, and modernization initiatives with a focus on solving complex challenges. Early in my career, I led post-Fukushima licensing for the first new U.S. reactors in 30 years, setting a new standard for safety and regulatory excellence. Since then, I’ve remained focused on innovation, whether reducing nuclear waste processing or aligning infrastructure modernization with national defense goals. Today, I serve as Deputy Associate Administrator at the NNSA, where I help shape the future of nuclear deterrence and sustainability. One of my key initiatives has been integrating climate vulnerability assessments into nuclear security operations to ensure resilience. I’ve also led negotiations that resulted in $1 billion in cost savings by modernizing environmental regulations for waste, turning policy into tangible operational outcomes. Previously, I served as an internal consultant to NNSA leadership, helping transform a $24 billion enterprise from a research-oriented model to one focused on scalable production. I also contributed to national clean energy goals during my time at the Department of Energy’s Loan Program Office, where I led an operational overhaul to support a $40 billion loan deployment mandate. Within six months, we delivered a plan that resulted in $20.3 billion in loan activity, while also digitizing operations to enhance efficiency. Much of my work has focused on building high-performing, cross-functional teams to tackle critical national missions. During the COVID-19 crisis, I led a 50-member task force to ensure the safety of employees while maintaining the continuity of nuclear operations. I’ve also driven enterprise-wide safety and environmental reforms, streamlined nuclear materials management, and transformed transuranic waste processing, keeping national defense programs on track. I’ve held senior roles at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, AREVA NP, Alion Science and Technology, and the DOE. My approach combines technical rigor with strategic leadership, supported by advanced education in finance, civil and environmental engineering, as well as executive programs at MIT and the University of Texas. I’m passionate about driving innovation in nuclear safety, clean energy financing, and infrastructure modernization, and I’m committed to building a safer, more sustainable future.
