Background
About Gregory Pinches
An engineering geologist by training, Greg provides technical leadership on the geotechnical aspects of infrastructure projects gathered from 30 years of project experience, including 11 years in NZ. Besides Auckland motorways and major local tunnels, Greg’s work portfolio includes landmark international projects, such as Hong Kong’s International Airport, West Rail and Light Rail Grade Separation. His early career was devoted to power station and roads projects in UK and India. Greg’s PhD research provided practical training in engineering geology that was immediately applicable to industry. He is skilled in scoping, planning, procuring, managing and undertaking complex ground investigations. His geological training informs his development of ground models and, through a rigorous interrogation of test data, Greg determines realistic representative parameters for geotechnical design. Greg has experienced projects in a consultant’s design office acting for the owner or the construction contractor. He had a stint in Government and his work as a site engineer on major construction has given Greg practical experience in foundations, earthworks and ground improvement. He has become an expert in planning, monitoring and interpreting geotechnical instrumentation. Greg is experienced in managing large volumes of geotechnical data, through use of databases and then coding and extracting information. He has been at the forefront of exchange of data in digital format. He has output many large Geotechnical Data Reports in support of Geotechnical Baseline Reports, particularly where they apply to tunnelling projects. Greg’s technical interests include slope stability, for which he helped pioneer Natural Terrain Hazard Assessments in Hong Kong. He has published over 20 technical papers on interesting case studies and on a range of topics. Greg has also built and led a team of geotechnical professionals and provided leadership to support corporate management.
