About Gregory Zapata

With a Masters in Data Analytics, I am an accomplished analyst with over 7 years of experience creating, managing, and developing KPI metrics. I began my career in education where I spent some time as an educator teaching middle school mathematics. While this didn't end up being the career path for me, it instilled in me essential planning and organizational skills, the ability to convey material to people at different skill levels, and confirmed my appreciation for leveraging data to drive and share insights. This led me to pursue a masters in Data Analytics at the University of Texas at San Antonio where I learned everything from SQL coding to advanced machine learning. I developed a passion and expertise for data visualization and in my favorite project, I created a customer segmentation scheme that grouped consumers into four distinct groups in regards to the kind of products they purchased. Shortly after graduation I was hired at USAA as a Decision Science analyst. In this role I specialized in reporting and planning/forecasting on growth, retention, and ultimately leading cross-functional teams to leverage customer insights that drive overall business strategy. While at USAA I led the development and execution of a critical KPI which measured the strength of a family's relationship with the company. Efforts to improve this metric required collaboration with teams to develop initiatives for improving the metric, creating reporting, modeling plans and forecasts, and ultimately resulted in an 80% improvement in the metric over the course of three years. During this time I also led a 1 million dollar effort to modernize our data systems. This required collaborating across engineering, governance, and downstream teams to ensure that we delivered the project within our deadlines as well as met business and regulatory requirements. The final product resulted in the data democratization of critical customer information resulting in faster queries and deeper analytical dives across the enterprise. With six years of experience under my belt it's time for me to take the next step and seek new opportunities as I come into the mid-life of my career.
