As a modern languages educator, I firmly believe in the importance of learning language from the use of level-appropriate authentic materials in the classroom. I strongly believe in the 5 C's, as outlined by ACTFL, in order to help students move toward linguistic proficiency, not simply achievement (or rote memorization). I teach my students the 3 P's of culture, as language and culture cannot be separated from each other. Modern languages should not be learned one page at a time from a textbook; they should be lived and experienced in authentic settings whenever possible.
