About Haley Schroer
As a historian of visual and material culture, I have a passion for tracing the connections between surviving manuscripts, paintings, and objects and the formal training to do so with precision. I received a B.A. in History and Spanish, Summa Cum Laude, from Texas Christian University in 2016. From there, I earned my M.A. from the University of Texas at Austin in May 2018, where my master’s report, “‘Scandalizing the Public’: Clothing and Perception in Mexico City’s Seventeenth-Century Inquisitorial Sumptuary Trials” won the 2019 Perry Prize for Best Master’s Thesis/Report. In August 2023, I received my PhD in History with a specialization in colonial Latin America from UT Austin. My dissertation,"Sartorial Subversions: Appearance, Identity, and Sumptuary Legislation in the Spanish Empire," examined the rise of racialized clothing laws in the Spanish Empire throughout the seventeenth century.
