About Hannah Flick

Currently, I live and learn on the unneeded territory of the Syilx, Ktunaxa, and Sinixt peoples. I recognize and honour the care that has been taken and continues to be taken of these lands since time immemorial by all Indigenous, First Nations, and Metis peoples and recognize my privilege to live on these lands as a settler guest. I am a teacher candidate at the University of British Columbia Rural Teacher Education Program. The root of my pedagogy as an educator is my firm belief that children are capable, competent, knowledgable, whole beings that come to us with prior knowledge and as their best selfs and that we must honour who students are in our interactions with them. I believe that classrooms are places full of diversity, and we must know our students and teach to who they are, recognizing their past, present and future. I know that looking to the Land as another teacher and teaching to the environment makes for deeper learning. I believe that creating safe, literate, supportive learning environments is central to relationship building and crucial to encouraging learning. I believe that we teach who we are, and that consistent self reflection and self authorship help us to better our practice. I believe that arts integration is an inclusive, effective, and engaging practice. I know that learning is lifelong, reflexive, collaborative and socially constructed. My learning journey has informed my practice and pedagogy and I continue to learn more from celebrated educators and authors each day. Prior to beginning my Bachelor of Education in Elementary and Middle Years, I worked as an Early Childhood Educator primarily in Infant/Toddler Education as well as Preschool programs. Additionally, I have worked with children with disabilities doing respite care and music therapy, as music and arts are something I am very passionate about. I have also worked as a music teacher, primarily teaching voice lessons to students. My years of experience with children from multiple backgrounds has informed who I am and how I interact with my learners, my colleagues and my community.
