Background

About Hannah Gates

Before law school, I worked as an educator in Metro Detroit. Through that experience, I developed my ability to become an effective child advocate by ensuring students access to resources, such as special education, social services, and culturally relevant teaching methods. I relentlessly advocate for students to receive an equitable education, regardless of their background. Since beginning my legal education, I have focused my education and work towards child advocacy and diversity. Moreover, in my first year of law school, I was appointed Educational Coordinator for MSU Law’s Citing Slavery Program. Through this role, I have had the opportunity to assist in creating a pilot program to provide students of in Detroit access to law school curriculum to motivate students to attend law school. Through my second year of law school, I have continued to work with the Saginaw Public Defenders Office. My time with the Saginaw Public Defenders Office reinforced my commitment to equity, accessibility, and justice. Moreover, I have obtained an externship with MI-AECRES to provide underserved students in Michigan with outstanding legal representation when facing educational inequities. I have also been afforded the opportunity to work alongside Abdnour Weiker LLP, whose mission is to protect the rights and futures of students and educators, which furthers my experience for leading education change to ensure best practices and policies are being implemented to further support students and educators.
