I am a British nurse with 20 years experience in the Health Care sector. I began my nursing career in working as a staff nurse in Care of the Elderly nursing. I went on to work in Intensive Care and as an Agency Nurse across varied health care settings. Following this 4 years were spent focusing on working in Medical Admissions in the acute hospital setting. Twelve years ago in 2007 I became a Clinical Site Coordinator, with the Capacity and Site Management Team for NHS Lothian (Edinburgh, Scotland) encompassing staff and bed inventory. The teams daily responsibilities included the overall operational management of the hospital sites including the delivery of safe and effective patient flow in both emergency and planned care. The job required highly collaborative work between the 3 acute sites, Sick Kids Hospital and 3 primary care hospitals to ensure collective management of the bed remit whilst maintaining patient flow and safety. The scope of responsibility included- the management of over 100 flexible beds across the adult sites- the management and deployment of the clinical workforce across the site- the site response team for fire, security alerts, cardiac arrest and other clinical emergencies- the co-ordination of response to internal emergencies and implementation of the Divisions Major Incident Procedure. It was a highly rewarding role that presented new challenges on a daily basis. I was required to be an exceptional communicator with a strong clinical background, someone who could lead with vision and initiative in situations of stress and crisis.
