About Hari Nathan

I am an Associate Professor with Tenure at the University of Michigan Medical School. I completed both my undergraduate and medical education with honors at The Johns Hopkins University. I also completed advanced training in health services research and was awarded a PhD from The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. My clinical residency training in general surgery was at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, by clinical fellowship in complex general surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where I also served as the Chief Administrative Fellow in Surgery. I joined the faculty of the University of Michigan in 2014. My clinical focus includes the multi-disciplinary treatment of tumors of the pancreas, liver, bile duct, and stomach. I have particular interests in the treatment of liver metastases from colorectal cancer and direct Michigan Medicine’s Hepatic Artery Infusion Pump (HAIP) Program. I also serve as the Surgical Director of the Multidisciplinary Pancreatic Cancer Clinic, coordinating the efforts of a multidisciplinary team at the busiest pancreatic cancer program in Michigan. I have a federally funded health services research program focused on variation in the cost and quality of surgical care. I have studied the impact of innovative payment models in the Medicare program on surgical care. More recently, much of my work has focused on understanding variation in surgical quality and costs within and between hospital systems. I also direct the Michigan Value Collaborative, an organization funded by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan to improve the value of healthcare provided by hospitals, physician organization, and other providers in Michigan.
