Background

About Harrison Metz

I graduated Magna Cum Laude With Honors from Valparaiso University Law School in May 2019. I was also the Executive Editor of Publication for Volume 53 of the Valparaiso University Law Review. My Note, “‘Your Device is Disabled’: How and Why Compulsion of Biometrics to Unlock Devices Should be Protected by the Fifth Amendment Privilege.” I externed for U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael G. Gotsch from May to July of 2017. There I researched cases, drafted opinions, and attended hearings. I regularly interacted with the Judge, as well as the chambers staff. I worked on cases involving discovery disputes, social security, and a motion to dismiss. For the 2017-2018 school year I was an extern for U.S. District Judge Jon E. DeGuilio. I worked as an extern for the Judge from August 2017 to May 2018. While there, I researched issues, drafted opinions, and attended various hearings. I worked closely with the clerks on cases and interacted with the Judge. From June 2018 to October 2, 2019, I worked as a law clerk for Sopko, Nussbaum, Inabnit & Kaczmarek. I spent my time researching for cases and drafting various documents, including memoranda, motions, letters, and discovery. I became licensed to practice in Indiana on October 2, 2019, and I worked as an attorney at Sopko, Nussbaum, Inabnit & Kaczmarek from then until February 2020. Currently, I am licensed to practice in the State of Indiana and the United Stated District Court for the Northern District of Indiana. While at Valparaiso University Law School, I was a member of the Valparaiso University Law Review as both a Notewriter and the Executive Editor of Publication. My Note,"Your Device is Disabled": How and Why Compulsion of Biometrics to Unlock Devices Should be Protected by the Fifth Amendment Privilege published in June 2019 as 53 Val. U. L. Rev. I was heavily involved in the article editing process, often undertaking final rounds of editing before publication of the articles. One of my primary duties was to reach out to and maintain contact with authors, as well as obtain executed publication contracts from them.
