About Harry Phillips

Architecture and planning have always interested me from a young age, utilising skills such as initiative and resourcefulness to successfully drive a project forward and find practical design solutions. Last July I did not know where I wanted to go in my career, so I enrolled at Suffolk New College, in Ipswich - where I studied Level 3 Business (BTEC), which covered; retail marketing; management; finance; and many other units of study. Before that I studied Level 3 Art & Design (BTEC), where my interest in Architecture really began to grow and develop. I work part-time to cover college expenses, but I have also volunteered at Sue Ryder, where I have learnt indispensable skills and gained great knowledge about retail and customer/client relations. I have dealt with people in the real world, experiencing first-hand how to build and maintain relationships with a broad range of people. I have developed my transferable skills, like communication and numeracy skills. I have learnt that customer service is crucial in business and good communication is key. This year my fellow students and I planned an event that raised a total of £1,107 for Emmaus, Ipswich - with over 100 guests at Shelley's Restaurant in support of an amazing cause! The charity provides homeless people in and around Ipswich with meaningful work, and gives them the skills and experience needed to obtain paid employment. I worked very closely with Sue Hall (Women in Rural Enterprise) to plan and implement the event with fellow students - managing a team of 20 to ensure the event ran smoothly and was successful. I have learnt a great deal about planning and the implementations of it; gaining invaluable practical skills that I'm sure will be of great use to me in the future. I am hoping to obtain a long-term work experience placement at an Architecture Firm this year, which will lead up to getting the best possible university place in September 2016.
