About Harshvardhan Kumar

I have over 40 years of experience in the maritime industry and began my career as a deck cadet, serving onboard merchant vessels in various ascending capacities, obtaining my command in 1997. I spent 28 years at sea, 11 of them as a Master on bulk carriers with major global shipping lines where I faced numerous challenging situations. Between sailing stints, I spent my leave periods ashore teaching pre-sea and post-sea officers at a nautical college in New Delhi, India. I then hung up my “sea boots” in 2008 and moved to Australia with my wife and two sons and have since then worked as a marine surveyor throughout Australia. I have been extensively involved in conducting various surveys including damage surveys, risk surveys, discharging project cargo, numerous investigations relating to major maritime losses and surveys for various P&I Clubs. I am a Master Mariner and hold a Diploma in Loss Adjusting. I am also a Senior Associate with the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF) and an Affiliate of the Australian Institute of Chartered Loss Adjusters (AICLA). I have also qualified as an Associate Member of the Association of Average Adjusters. I am an Associate Fellow of the Nautical Institute (AFNI) and a Member of the Australasian Institute of Marine Surveyors (MAIMS) where I am an accredited grain surveyor.
