Background
About Hasan Mahmud
My research interests center on how society shapes an individual's actions. Substantively, I explore how migrants' social belonging influences/shapes/determines their remittance. More broadly, I'm interested in studying globalization and development as they shape people's life experiences in the Global South. My recent publications and studies outline a sociological approach to studying migrants' remittance, the racialization of Muslims, positionality in migration research, and decolonization. My book "Remittance-as-Belonging: Global Migration, Transnationalism and the Quest for Home" is published this year from Rutgers University Press. Last year, I co-edited with Min Zhou a volume titled "Beyond Economic Migration: Social, Historical, and Political Factors in US Immigration" published by New York University Press.
