About Hayley Egan

I am a First Class Honours (1:1) Masters of International and Comparative law graduate (LL.M) from Trinity College Dublin. I achieved a 1:1 grade in Refugee Law, International Criminal Law, a Human Rights Law Clinic and also in my dissertation. Focusing on foreign terrorist fighters who have travelled to Syria and Iraq to join ISIS, my dissertation examines the security threat the return of this cohort poses to Europe. It also uncovers the legal responses of France, Belgium and the UK to this phenomenon. Additionally, I created a comprehensive and contemporary dataset of terrorist attacks committed by ISIS affiliates in Europe from 2014 until June 2020. I was also awarded a First Class Honours Bachelor of Laws (LL.B International) degree from Maynooth University (Ireland) and the Università di Trento (Italy), finishing second in my class. I am currently based in Dublin, working on the Migrant Project at Crosscare. I previously worked in the United Nations Migration Agency, IOM in Dublin and I have also worked at the Department of Foreign Affairs within the Legal Division for 1 year. Additionally, I have worked at two international criminal tribunals, namely the United Nations Residual Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (the former ICTY), within the Office of the Prosecutor in the Hague and another tribunal also situated in The Hague, working in the Court of Appeal. Furthermore, I have also worked as a Judicial Assistant and Researcher to the High Court of Ireland, appointed to a High Court Judge. Additionally, I have worked as a Legal Executive at the Bank of Ireland and as a Legal Researcher at Maynooth University's law department.
