I recently spent hours curating the perfect music playlist for my sister just for fun. The assignment: a few new song recommendations. The result: a playlist separated into 5 different categories, broken down by moods and themes, and annotated with personal comments. I’ve always been able to get lost in independent work that involves recognizing patterns, analyzing details, organizing information, and presenting it in a way that’s interesting to people. In my current role, I take photos of consumer goods after carefully noting the details of each product into a database and prepping them to be camera-ready. I use AfterEffects to make necessary adjustments to the footage before sending it off onto the next step of production. I’m often alone for hours, getting into a groove, doing repetitive tasks…and I love it! In college, I was one of those people who would rather write a 20 page paper than take a 20 question exam. I’ve always been more interested in the process behind coming up with the answer than the actual answer. I enjoyed my Web/UX design classes that gave me the opportunity to study other websites, take detailed notes, and research the best practices each had to offer. One of my professors commented that they’d never seen anyone put so much effort into the research portion and that the effort showed in my final design.(And learning HTML and CSS only added to my enjoyment of those particular classes!) Once in a while as a side gig, I’ll do some graphic design or branding work for consumer product packaging. After years of classes focusing on digital design, branding campaign strategy, and content creation, I’ve gotten skilled at understanding the requirements, researching what else is in the marketplace, determining the needed hierarchy of information, and putting my artistic skills to work. Yes, I am also creative! And I’ve been told I’m a pretty skilled writer, too! And while I thrive working independently, I’m often complimented on my ability to lead a project or present to groups in a clear and entertaining way. While some may say I’m all over the place, I recognize the pattern: I’m an independent creator who can spend hours behind the scenes strategizing, organizing, and analyzing; I can communicate my findings, data, and ideas through a variety of mediums, but always in a way that is organized and easy to understand.
