About Heath Collins

I'm a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) currently serving as a Staff Therapist with Waterloo Counseling Center, providing individual and group psychotherapy to LGBT individuals, as well as general population clients. My primary treatment models include Acceptance & Commitment Therapy and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. Previously, I served as a Crisis Hotline QMHP, providing telephonic counseling, crisis intervention, and resource linkage through Travis County's mental health crisis hotline, as well as through the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Prior to that position, I worked as a Rehabilitation Specialist with Austin Travis County Integral Care, where I provide intensive case management and life-skills and symptom management training to adults with pervasive mental illness. After receiving my LBSW in January of 2007, I provided case management for adults and children with developmental disabilities in group home and foster care settings through the Texas Home and Community-Based Services program. While I was an undergraduate student at the University of North Texas, I became the Activities Coordinator, and later the Co-President of the Gay and Lesbian Association of Denton, a student support and advocacy group which routinely provided education and support on sexual health, substance abuse, identity development, and other issues relevant to LGBTQ university students. I also had the opportunity to empower students to engage in legislative advocacy and to organize and participate in regular fund-raising activities for the local AIDS services agency. My specific areas of interest include mood and anxiety disorders, LGBTQ issues, Buddhist psychology, and mindfulness-based therapies.
