About Heather Nicol

With over five years of work experience and 25 years of lived experience in the addictions and at-risk fields, Heather is a Canadian Certified Addictions Counsellor who provides holistic and compassionate interventions and treatments for individuals and families struggling with substance abuse and mental health issues. She holds several credentials both from her current and former careers, including CCAC, Recovery Coaching, Intervention training and various Quality Assurance and Health, Safety and Environment certifications, and has expertise in intake and treatment planning, relapse prevention, working with high risk populations, secondary traumatic stress reduction, motivational interviewing, program development and implementation, and group facilitation concepts.Heather is also a passionate advocate for living in recovery and was the chair of the Recovery Day Calgary Planning Committee, a community-based event that celebrates the positive impact of recovery and reduces the stigma of addiction. She is currently completing her University Diploma of Arts in Psychology and Criminology at Athabasca University, and will continue to pursue a degree in Human Services. She has a keen interest in equine facilitated wellness and psychotherapy, a field where she has completed her initial courses, with the goal to further develop her skills and knowledge, once her Bachelor's is complete. Heather leverages her previous and highly applicable career as a senior professional in workplace safety, where she had over 23 years of success in various leadership roles across different sectors, worldwide, to enhance her addictions counselling practice with highly developed people skills, supervisory skills, and industrial and construction Health, Safety, and Environmental Program Management skills.
