About Heather Summers

As a current high school teacher and experienced curriculum writer in developing Common Core digital and physical content, I am deeply familiar with the mandate to: provide educational leadership in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education, ensure strategic planning and project oversight, professional learning for teachers, school leaders and others, and work with educational teams to provide high quality curriculum implementation and support. In my previous role as a curriculum writer with the West Virginia Department of Education, as well as with the Marion County Board of Education, I energetically developed mathematics-specific learning sequences linked ot the state curriculum that provide teachers with greater flexibility as they deliver current integrated learning sequences. I am also involved in curriculum writing projects, such as development of rubrics, teaching resources, and templates within my school. I am experienced in successfully working with Special Education students and developing skills in students of all levels of achievement, and am able to utilize creative skills to design and implement well-received lesson plans and program structure. I establish learning environments which meet the physical, emotional, intellectual, social and creative needs of children. Being an empathetic listener and persuasive speaker, I effectively counsel students and parents on goals, objectives and plans, while rapidly developing and adjusting lesson plans to meet unforeseen classroom situations. In my role as a technical analytics intern, I achieved knowledge and experience with creating several data-enriched reports, using IBM Cognos and predictive analytics, for Higher Education Policy Commission (HEPC). These reports were then uploaded and organized on the HEPC website for remote access. Moreover, I helped write and present for a grant, in regards to WV Network’s proposal for becoming the data and analysis center for higher education institutions involved in the Bridging the Gap consortium. In addition to my professional experience, I hold a Masters of Science in Interdisciplinary Mathematics and a Master of Educaiton in Digital Media, New LIteraacies, and Learning.
