Background
About Heather White
Currently, I serve as Assistant Director for Engagement & Outreach at ECU's Joyner Library. I am responsible for strengthening and managing Joyner Library’s strategic partnerships. My position provides leadership, oversight and an integrated vision for the Library’s grant activity, as well as its events, exhibits, marketing, and communication to help Joyner achieve its mission and goals. In my current role, I have secured numerous grants, including a most recent award from the North Carolina Humanities Council, to lead community outreach efforts, collect perspectives and voices missing from the historic narrative, and to conduct research that documents local historic, culture, while actively engaging and educating community members in the process. This work, “Beyond Bricks & Mortar: Revisiting the Sycamore Hill Community,” shares a missing piece in the history of the African American communities impacted and displaced in the 1960-70’s. “Beyond Bricks & Mortar” includes oral histories, photo documentation, an online and traveling exhibition, community training workshops and presentations. Previously, I worked as the Director of Library Project Development for Joyner Library. My primary responsibility included coordination of special events, grant writing and grant management, as well as serving as the liaison for the "Friends of Joyner Library." I also have extensive experience in the non-profit sector. For the previous 7 1/2 years I worked at the Pitt County Arts Council, an organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in Pitt County and beyond through the arts, culture, and education. Previously, I served as the Director of Marketing & Outreach, and prior worked as the Director of Education & Outreach. Previously, I worked for 2 years as the Director of Education & Exhibitions at Community Council for the Arts, the local arts council and non-profit organization dedicated to help Lenoir County residents experience the joy, promise, and the pursuit of artistic excellence. I have over 9 years of experience in the planning and coordinating of special events and exhibits, as well as grant writing and management. Furthermore, my employment experiences have included volunteer management, budgeting, and fundraising and donor activities. Coming from the non-profit sector, I have a proven track record in organization and time management, and do not mind working a non-traditional schedule when necessary. This blend of experience speaks to my strong work ethic and dedication to community engagement.
