About Helly Jadav

I am a Master's Student at Flinders University pursuing a specialization in Master of Biotechnology degree. I have done an Integrated Master's in Biological sciences from UM-DAE Center for Excellence in Basic Sciences, Mumbai and also awarded with DST Inspired Scholarship. The first major project that I worked on was a reading project on “Algal Metabolites: An attractive source against oxidative stress and skin ageing”, under Dr. V.L Sirisha at my institute. During this project, I understood how skin ages naturally, how it is affected by extrinsic and intrinsic factors, and the mechanism of how certain proteins in the skin are destroyed. I also understood the action of secondary metabolites from algae on matrix components and its photo-protective effects. With time there is also an increase in demand for natural skin products compared to synthetic products due to fewer side effects. Role of these algal metabolites in skin ageing and the literature available on it has made me realize the growing demand of using algal metabolites in order to slow down ageing due to its anti-ageing potential. As an extension to this project, I also worked on an experimental project to elucidate the anti-aging potential of sulphated polysaccharides from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. I was able to get my research work published in Archives of Microbiology & Immunology, Fortune journals. I also worked on a project with Dr. Basir Ahmad to study the effect of Antibiotics against Amyloidosis. This research work was published in the International Journal of Biological Macromolecules. I did my Master’s project on “Studies on the crosstalk between salt and heavy metal stresses in halophytes” with Dr. Ashish Srivastava and Penna Suprasanna at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai. In this project, we studied about how many regions around the world are contaminated with high concentration of salt and heavy metals due to anthropogenic activities like poor irrigation practices, improper use of fertilizers and industrial pollution. This constitutes a serious threat to both agriculture as well as human health. We attempted to study the common/specific mechanism that confers resistance to salt as well as heavy metal stress in Sesuvium portulacastrum.
