About Henry Ashton

I am currently a data analyst and PhD candidate in Political Science at OU's Carl Albert Congressional Research and Studies Center. While at the Center, I have had the opportunity to hone my analytical and data interpretation skills through extensive research and statistical analysis. With a passion for solving puzzles, finding patterns, and using data mining to glean insights from complex data sets, I am seeking a challenging role in industry engaging in data analytics or survey research. During my doctoral research, I have acquired expertise in R, Microsoft Excel, and Qualtrics, and I have leveraged this knowledge to develop sophisticated data models and visualizations in the context of observational and survey research. I have also engaged in large-scale collaborative projects with research teams from the Center and colleagues from other universities and presented my findings at many academic conferences to audiences of 50-100. In preparation for a transition to industry I have also been engaging with projects using SQL and Tableau. In addition to my technical skills, I possess excellent communication and collaboration abilities. I served as instructor of record at the University of Oklahoma for courses in Research Methodology, American Federal Government, and the U.S. Congress, and I have experience teaching to classes of up to 250 students or as small as 20 advanced students. These experiences have given me the chance to communicate complicated research findings to a variety of audiences (with vastly different experience levels), which I believe would translate very well to being able to communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders. One of the insights I gained in academia was that I was passionate about working with data, but wanted to engage in research that felt like it combined data-driven decision-making with real stakes and an impact on people and institutions. I am now actively seeking opportunities in data analysis and visualization or survey research/survey analytics, and am excited to bring my skills and expertise to a role in industry.
