About Henry Jiang

My name is Henry Jiang, I am a 11th grade student at University City High School. I try my best to be engaged in my community and am well experienced a wide variety of extracurricular activities. To start I am an Aaron Price fellow, this selective program allows me to explore job opportunities and life skills to improve our society with peers from other schools. At my school I am a cadet Staff Sargent in the MCJROTC program lead some of my classes activities. I also participated in the Devil Pup's program which was a 10 day strenuous boot camp like experience where I gained leadership and communication skills. I utilized these skills to be highly involved in my school community. I serve on the Student Principal Advisory Council where a group of students address issues at our school, and I also serve as Co-chair of SGT ( Site Governance Team ) where I collaborate with teachers and students to get things done and improve our school community. In order to immerse myself with a diverse perspective, I joined the UCSD Listen Lab project where a small group of selected students researched student engagement and how to promoted a diverse, inclusive and engaging school environment. I also am a strong Sustainably advocate and have been working with district officials to reduce plastic waste at our school. I organized a team to help piolet sustainable alternatives to plastic forks such as bamboo and birch forks. These efforts as well as increasing recycling at our school allowed our school to win second place in the SDUSD recycling challenge. I am still working with district officials to reduce paper tray waste and I have founded a club "EcolunchesUC" to help promote and keep our school and community environmental friendly. I also am very passionate about music. I have been playing cello for over 7 years now and I am a participant of the San Diego Youth Symphony. I am a participant of the second highest orchestra "symfonia" and I enjoy volunteering at senior home communities to play music for them and enrich their experience with simple yet meaningful classical music. My love of music also drove to become a freelance musician. I have played a wedding as a solo performer and was able to enhance the wedding experience. Lastly, I have a love for my culture and background. I am an Asian American and I have learned Chinese for all my life. I got a 5 on the AP Chinese exam and volunteered over 100 hours to teach children at the San Diego Chinese academy to teach Chinese.
