About Henry Woo

Henry Woo is a specialist prostate surgeon. His primary clinical and research interest lie with prostate cancer and benign prostatic hyperplasia. He is actively involved in clinical research and regularly presents at both local and international meetings. This interest has extended to membership of trial management committees of clinical trials being conducted in ANZ as well as being a Board Director of the Australian and New Zealand Uro-genital and Prostate Cancer Trials Group (ANZUP). He actively engages the pharmaceutical and medical device industry. He strongly believes that clinicians working in this sector create important partnerships that allow for optimal and relevant product development that can make a difference to people's lives. He is a vocal advocate of ethical behaviour of companies. In particular he opposes proposals to carry out for clinical trials in developing countries for sake of expediency and where the implications of human experimentation may not be well understood, where back up care is limited and where local human research ethics committees lack appropriate clinical governance. He acts as consultant or advisory medical board for numerous companies and has developed a strong understanding of the processes associated in investigating new tests or treatments as well as bringing them into the market place. Some of the companies that he is either working with now or has worked with in the past include Novartis, Amgen, Astellas, AstraZeneca, Hospira, J&J, Sanofi-Aventis, American Medical Systems, Boston Scientific, Neotract, Vidamed and GSK. He is open to approach by companies wishing to develop products in a transparent ethical approach to their business. Through his involvement in professional bodies such as the USANZ and with government agencies such as the Prosthetic Devices Committee, he has developed an understanding of of the interplay between vested interests and process.
