About Herman van Eck
DNA is a fascinating molecule! It encodes the heritable characters of species in nature. In my research I try to keep a balance between fundamental and applied research with the aim to contribute to the discipline of genetics and to help crop breeders with molecular tools to improve the genetic quality of their cultivars. In my teaching activities not only knowledge should be transmitted, but also awareness of the societal implications of genetics,(crop-)evolution and molecular genetics. I was not born to become politician or economist to tackle poverty and malnutricion, but I hope that my research on potato will make a small technical contribution to sustainable agriculture.
