What do you do?” I started my reinsurance carrier in 2007, when I joined Benfield (now Aon) in Tokyo and have been serving reinsurance customers in Japan. I always see Tokyo as a spectacular city from global (re)insurance perspective in that it accomodates such significant and diverse panel of insurers, and my mission here is to serve this extremely important market to my best ability in collaboration with my customers, colleagues and external partners to navigate through this ever evolving world. “Why did you choose to go into the re/insurance industry?” Back in 2005, I was fascinated by the way the insurance system works; how individual risks could appear so undesirable, random and unpredictable, and yet insurers could successfully turn such risks into a fixed cost for insureds while maintaining stability in their own operations. At that time, there was also news of a launch of a cyber product in Japan, in response to the implementation of Act on the Protection of Personal Information in April 2005. It appeared so innovative and creative to develop such coverage; to price such an unknown consequence and to convert ever-changing customer demand into a business opportunity. What brought me to the insurance business indeed was its power of turning undesirable risk, seemingly beyond control, into desirable, controllable business opportunity.
