About Hilda Ramirez

What does one do when they have interests in mathematics/computing, medicine, and music? In my case, engage in them all! My college journey began with me as a math major with a pre-medicine concentration and it ended in a computer science and music double major. I’ve always had a deep interest in computer science, but seeing the vital role of data during the current COVID-19 crisis has inspired me to want to use data to solve societal challenges, particularly in the healthcare field. The various roles I have held throughout my career already share the common theme of using data to solve problems. I’ve used relational databases to implement client benefit plans under stringent timelines. In the past year I delivered a SQL program that vastly improved an existing process, cutting down manual work by 75%. Now I am looking forward to applying my computational thinking, intrapersonal skills, and creativity to asking and answering questions of big data. The instrument that I play semi-professionally, the oboe, is one of the main solo instruments in an orchestra and is also notoriously finicky. One must learn to juggle all aspects of playing it, while making it stand out beautifully during the most emotional moments in the music. Yet, it must also blend in seamlessly with the rest of the orchestral colors at all other times. Similarly in my professional life I focus on being the very best at my role while always keeping in mind my contribution to the big picture.
