Holger Karas Today I am working as Senior Field Application Specialist Enterprise Solutions at QIAGEN with main responsibility for Europe. As one of the founders of BIOBASE, I was Representative Director and General Manager of Nihon BIOBASE KK in Yokohama, Japan and member of the board of directors. I was responsible for Business Development in Germany, responsible for setting up the relations between HGMD and BIOBASE, HGMD is today one of the most successful products of BIOBASE. I left BIOBASE mostly for undisclosed reasons, part of it was to accept a new challenge. I have no affiliations with BIOBASE anymore. I have a degree in chemistry of University of Braunschweig and worked in bioinformatics since 1993 in Edgar Wingender's group before entering the business domain in 1997. In my scientific career I was responsible for basic conception of the relational database schema for TRANSFAC as well as the development of the internet infrastructure and the first user interface. I also developed the tool “Patch” and evaluated structural DNA parameters for the recognition of transcription factor binding sites. More than 9 publications were the outcome of these activities. After that, I moved on to a more business related career. In 1997 I was one of the founders of BIOBASE and took over the responsibility as CEO in 1998. Consequently I built the business from a one man show to 5 employees in autumn I raised in total 2.5 Million Euro venture capital as well as a strategic investment of Euro for BIOBASE.
