Background

About Howard Branz

My passion is creating new energy technologies through applied science and engineering, with a focus on commercial success. I enjoyed leading photovoltaic and other renewable energy R&D at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory before pivoting to be a Program Director at the newly formed DOE ARPA-E. At ARPA-E, I was privilege to learn from and to lead contributors to our accelerating energy transition. I apply solid-state physics, optics, materials science, electrochemistry, surface science, modeling and technoeconomic analysis to solve difficult problems. I love working with interdisciplinary teams that invent, develop and commercialize the energy technology we need to tackle our global climate challenge. Deep involvement with start-ups, large companies and investors gives me an understanding of how new technologies succeed – and fail – to get to market.
