WHAT: My pre-retirement planning workshop provides counsel that helps physicians and surgeons consider how they should prepare for a future after medicine. As a physician aware of the unique issues doctors will face, my presentation helps position us for a fulfilling future. WHY: Physicians are immersed in the profession of medicine from an early age, defining our identity. We have special needs in retirement planning. Money is clearly important, but it is more important to develop a fulfilling lifestyle. I spent many years as an accomplished doctor, navigated my own retirement from the profession & know doctors must prepare differently to be fulfilled. MY BACKGROUND: I was chief of Pediatric Pulmonology & Critical Care at Riley Children’s Hospital during the time it evolved into one of the largest and busiest in the country. I am a founder of the specialties of pediatric pulmonology & critical care and served as Pediatric Assembly Chair for the American Thoracic Society. I have lectured extensively in China & South America as well as US and published 100 peer-reviewed articles. I learned the hard way to navigate into a future beyond my medical career, and converted my passion & skill of teaching into a program for helping others.
