About Howard Gault

I possess a broad background of experience as a field geologist as applied to a wide range of environmental, geotechnical, and exploration projects. I started my career as a carbonate petrologist, and spent nearly 10 years in the mining industry. Subsequently, I worked as an environmental and engineering geologist. At each step, I was self-taught and I acquired new skills and knowledge. My recent work has included the duties of Resident Geologist for the Saluda Dam remediation project. I worked on this project from the initial investigations through completion. Specific tasks included the design and implementation of a successful 1269-well dewatering program, the location and development of a 10- million cubic yard borrow area and engineering-geological mapping of the foundation. The dewatering program was a 13 million-dollar time and materials project and was completed under budget and on time. I am currently working for the DSMMCX. “The USACE Dam Safety Modification Mandatory Center of Expertise (DSMMCX) provides technical advice, oversight, review and production capability for all aspects of dam modification projects across USACE.” To date, I have worked as a geologist in 33 states and 15 countries, particularly in Central and South America. I have worked at nine existing dams and participated in site selection for another four dams. I specialize in field investigations and the management of personnel and equipment as part of large investigations with stringent regulatory oversight.
