About Hui Lin

My research spans multiple disciplines in computer science/engineering and electrical engineering. These disciplines include cyber security, Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), Internet of Things (IoT), Software-Defined Networking (SDN), operating systems, virtual machines, and power system analysis. My primary interests are on cyber security, especially in the context of Cyber-Physical Systems and Internet of Things. The unique approaches that differentiate my research from others include the following:* Interdisciplinary approaches. To detect attacks in power systems, I combined the theoretical models of the physical processes with the security analytics that are originally designed for operating systems and computer networks. This approach allows me to detect and prevent insider attacks that are crafted in legitimate formats but contain malicious semantics that can jeopardize critical physical operations.* Real data to drive and evaluate research. I have analyzed real data from CPSes, including logs and alerts from campus computing and network infrastructures and operational measurements from physical devices in a power system. The data helped me to understand the current conditions and constraints in CPSes and was used to construct benchmarks to evaluate my research.* Real systems and networks for experiments. To evaluate security research based on network design, I deployed a network operating system named Onos in a nation-wide network experiment platform called Geni testbed. Thus, I conducted experiments on large-scale wide area networks consisting of real hardware switches at different geographical sites.
