About Huiwen Xu

Since I was little, I have been helping my family in our Chinese restaurant, because I needed to feel useful to the people around me. Now I laugh when I think that since I was 8 years old I liked that things were well organized and always with good results. It made me happy when I compared myself to adults and they told me how capable I was. As I got older, I always liked being strict with myself and surpassing myself, without forgetting to live life with my family and my 2 dogs. ‍This personality carried me through my Ph.D. with ACTIBATE group (http://profith.ugr.es/actibate). Here, there were more resources available to me to learn. I had the opportunity to learn about different types of work-> First of all, before I started my Ph.D, I did my final job nutrition degree and master's degree as a scholarship researcher. I started learning the functionality of different metabolic cars, from different brands. I realize that I like doing different experiments to get answers. So during my Ph.D, I followed testing different medical devices. During the different tests, we wanted to improve the software where "ibuttons"(temperature sensors) were used, so we created Temperatus Software. Also, we compared "ibuttons" versus "E-tact" to measure temperature. Then, to see how cold exposure 🥶can change body temperature, using "embr wave"(temperature sensor like a watch⌚), I learned to use the thermal camera with the software FLIR. With these experiences, I am motivated to design projects which can get answers like clinical research- medical devices-> During Ph.D, I started by collecting data from a randomized control trial study with 150 participants. Then I was working in the lab, analyzing blood 🩸 and fecal samples. I am specialized in DNA extraction from fecal samples. Then, we did PCR and sequence to get results. In addition, I was presented with the opportunity to learn Bioinformatics and Biostatistics of the human microbiota both in Spain and in Germany 🧬🧬. After these years, I have realized that I like to teach and transmit my knowledge to people who need it, which is why I like to be a researcher to be able to transfer science. Outside of work, I like watching series in different languages: Chinese, English, Korean, Japanese, and of course Spanish.
