About Husnul Amin

Professor in Peace and Conflict Studies at the National Defence University Islamabad with a background in political economy, development studies, and political sociology. My research expertise lies in the study and analysis of political Islam, Islamic social movements, religion and politics, identity-based conflicts, and contemporary Muslim intellectual thought trajectories- Before joining NDU, I served as an Associate Professor of Politics at the Department of Politics and International Relations & Executive Director of the Iqbal International Institute for Research & Dialogue (IRD) at the International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI). I was also been awarded various fellowships, including a Fulbright Visiting Research Fellowship jointly hosted by the South Asia Center, University of Pennsylvania and Stockton University, NJ, United States, in 2019-20, and a postdoctoral fellowship (2013-14) supported by the DRS-COFUND Fellowship Program of Freie University Berlin and the European Commission, hosted by the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures & Societies (BGSMCS)- During my Fulbright fellowship, I conducted research on the emergence of youth mobilization and rights-based activism in the region adjacent to Pak-Afghan border, which was mainly affected by the jihadi discourses and mobilizations. In the postdoctoral fellowship in Germany, I carried out a research project on Islamic social movements in the era of neoliberal globalization. I had the opportunity to avail a short-term fellowship at William & Mary, Virginia (Jan 2014) and another short-term research stay at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, USA (Oct 2015). Likewise, in 2016-17, I participated in the de-colonial studies and critical Muslim studies summer schools held in Granada-Spain and Cape Town-South Africa- My doctoral project related to the crises of political Islam in South Asia and the emergence and proliferation of post-Islamism in Pakistan. I obtained my PhD in Development Studies from the International Institute of Social Studies of Erasmus University, The Netherlands- I have been providing academic research supervision to MPhil and PhD students working on various aspects of religion and politics in South Asia, Middle East, and the rest of the world. I have published over 30 peer-reviewed research papers and 9 books, and have visited over 30 countries as a paper presenter, session chair, keynote speaker, invited speaker, and as a field researcher.
