About Iain Betson

Iain has worked in the professional broadcast industry for more than quarter of a century. He began his career on Southern Sound Radio before joining the BBC as an engineer, based at Broadcasting House, London. He spent 10 years with the Corporation, working in national radio, 5 years as a station engineer at BBC Cambridgeshire and 2 years as a training instructor at the News & Current Affairs Directorate’s Journalist Training Department. In 1996 he joined Clyde Electronics. Initially as Chief Engineer of Talk Radio under a contract arrangement before moving to Capital Radio, to act as a Project Engineer to move Capital to Leicester Square. 1997 saw him join 3dB Ltd, a broadcast technical services company, as MD. Notable projects that 3dB undertook were the installation of London’s XFM radio and edit suites for Wizya TV in Maidstone. Iain formed Grove Audio-Visual & Broadcast Services (GAVB) in GAVB undertook, or was involved in, the installation of: • Studios for KISS 100 and Magic 105.4, London • Audio routers for BBC World Service, London • The ITV Southern Transmission Centre, London • Arsenal FC TV at the Emirates Stadium, London • TV & Radio Aftenblad in Stavanger, Norway • Consultancy for Radio City Group, Mumbai, India • Outside broadcasts for Ministry of Sound Radio He was a director of Xcel FM radio in Cambridgeshire until its sale to UKRD in 2001. 2010 saw Iain join dB Broadcast Ltd as a project manager, involved in the installation of the television news studios at the BBC’s West 1 building. In 2012 Iain started AV Resilience providing consultancy and AV technical problem solving services. In 2017 he was engaged by the BBC Academy to provide training in OpenMedia news management software. He has also delivered training for Classic FM, Cambridgeshire Regional College, Staffordshire University and The University of Derby. In 2019 he started Reel Resilience to support the resurgence of the use of analogue reel-to-reel tape recorders in the consumer and professional sectors. Reel Resilience is now the leading provider of maintenance and repair of, as well as the education in, these machines in the UK. Clients range from private collectors to leading studios. Iain regularly contributes to industry magazines and ezines.
